THE 3,800-TEU Mexico Polar ship has become the first vessel to dock at the new Hutchison Ports ICAVE terminal in the Port of Veracruz, reports London's Container Management. The ship belongs to a group of four structurally identical vessels in the Polar class that have been built for Hamburg Sud by Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding.

These Hamburg Sud vessels were designed with 1,000 reefer plugs to carry refrigerated cargo. The ships are integrated into the German carrier's northern Europe - Mexico/Caribbean (EMCS) Service, which connects Altamira, Veracruz and Progreso with Ireland, the UK, Antwerp and Bremerhaven.

Carlos Ayala, director of logistics and distribution of Alpek Poliester, which is a subsidiary of Grupo Alfa , one of the largest corporate groups in Mexico, said: 'We are proud to baptise this ship, while the city and the port of Veracruz celebrates its 500th anniversary.'

The Mexican economy, he said, is strong in the fruit sector, as well as in other industries with high import and export volumes, such as automotive manufacturing, chemical products and brewing.

'As a global operator, we are serving the Mexican market with a set of very competitive connections to almost all other continents,' he said.
