AMMITEC forms a working group to advance AI applications, governance, and training in the maritime industry.
AMMITEC has established a working group focused on the use of artificial intelligence in maritime activities. The group will work on application examples, governance, training, and guidelines.
The maritime information management organization AMMITEC announced that it has formed a new working group to support the use of artificial intelligence in the sector. The announcement was made at the 12th ShipIT Conference held on September 29, 2026, at the Eugenides Foundation in Greece. News about the conference was published in Cyprus Shipping News on October 5.
Guides for application and training will be prepared.
The new group will focus on the practical use of artificial intelligence in maritime activities, application examples, and governance issues. Artificial intelligence tools used outside the knowledge or oversight of organizations will also be addressed within the scope of the work.
The group's activities will include the development of comparative criteria, training initiatives, and the preparation of usage guidelines for the maritime sector.
Cybersecurity and energy efficiency were on the agenda.
At the conference organized by AMMITEC and BOUSSIAS Events, maritime executives, technology experts, and academics came together. Discussions covered not only artificial intelligence but also topics such as cybersecurity, data usage, connectivity infrastructure, energy efficiency, and decarbonization.
AMMITEC President Dr. Matthew Maheras emphasized that the use of technology should be evaluated alongside the benefits it provides for security, governance, and operations. Maheras also highlighted the importance of human oversight in the transition to artificial intelligence in daily maritime operations.
