THE Montreal Port Authority (MPA) plans to build a container terminal at Contrecoeur on the Island of Montreal that will lift the Canadian port's total annual container handling capacity to 2.1 million TEU.

When completed, the new terminal will allow the port of Montreal to keep the region competitive with the large American ports that are investing massively in their infrastructures.

Currently under review by the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CE), the new terminal will have a capacity of 1.14 million TEU per year. It will feature two berths, a container handling area, an intermodal rail yard, and a truck entry portal connected to the road network, Port Technology reported.

Before any work takes place, MPA's new terminal will be the subject of public consultation organised by the CE, including information sessions from February 27 to March 1, 2018.

MPA vice president Daniel Dagenais said: 'This additional port space that will become the Contrecoeur container terminal will make it possible to support the growth of this business segment and make the most of the economic and commercial opportunities arising from emerging markets.'
