MUMBAI's Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) container throughput increased 8.5 per cent year on year to 409,405 TEU in August, according to port statistics.

There has been increasingly widespread use of new technology to reduce dwell time and speed throughput, reports IHS Media.

Maersk's APM Terminals' Gateway Terminals India, accounting for 40 per cent of JNPT volume, posted a 12.3 per cent year-on-year increase to 172,075 TEU in August.

"There is no spare berth to accommodate any more services," said a company official.

August volume at other terminals in the public harbour were as follows: state-owned Jawaharlal Nehru Container Terminal volume came to 131,046 TEU, and was essentially flat while DP World's Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal was down six per cent to 51,825 TEU.

But DP World's second terminal, Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal, soared 65.5 per cent year on year to 54,459 TEU.

Year-to-date, JNPT combined volume was up 6.2 per cent to 2.02 million TEU with APMT Mumbai up 11.4 per cent to 830,813 TEU, according to data.
