MOL on time arrival performance on Asia to US trade lanes suffers setback

JAPAN'S Mitsui OSK Line (MOL) said 81 per cent of its vessels on the Asia to US west coast trade arrived on time during the three months up to December 2012, down from the 87 per cent performance level achieved in the previous quarter.

Vessels from Asia to the east coast of the US only managed to achieve a 73 per cent on time arrival performance during the quarter, down on the 84 per cent level recorded in the previous three month period.

But there were improvements in arrival times for vessels plying the trade between Asia and Europe, and between Asia and the Mediterranean.

The shipping line explained that while attempting to maintain last quarter's performance level for overall and east coast services, several weather interruptions on the US east coast, such as Hurricane Sandy, resulted in reduced service and significant delays. Berth congestion in Panama has also had some impact on the services.

All Asia to US west coast services experienced heavy delays due to labour issues (port strike) on the US west coast as well as inclement weather while departing from Asia.
