INDONESIAN domestic carrier Meratus Line has purchased its largest boxships to date, by acquiring a pair of 2,474 TEU vessels - Kanaga Island and Elba Island - from Hamburg-based Soundview Maritime for an en bloc price reported by Alphaliner of US$13 million.

The vessels have been renamed Meratus Jayakarta and Meratus Jayawijaya. Prior to the latest purchase, the company's biggest ship was the 2,105 TEU Meratus Jayapura.

Meratus' latest two ships were built in Germany and feature three cranes of 45 tonnes on each ship with 420 reefer plugs.

Meratus Line is one of Indonesia's leading domestic container carriers and the new pair of ships will bring its fleet to 52 ships ranging from 170 to 2,474 TEU, totalling 37,000 TEU, according to Singapore's Splash 24/7.
