A Maryland State Police helicopter crew helped rescue a sick passenger off the 'Grandeur of the Seas' in the evening of Aug 16, 2018. The Coast Guard – Sector Baltimore was notified by Royal Caribbean Cruise Line shortly after 9:45 p.m. that a passenger in “critical/life-threatening condition” required immediate medical evacuation on the ship. The Maryland State Police Aviation Command – at the request of the Coast Guard – performed the aerial extraction from the ship to provide medical care and transported the passenger to MedSTAR Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton. The ship was located in the Chesapeake Bay approximately 10 miles southwest of Tangier Island and was sailing at approximately six knots at the time of the medevac.
