Maritime Mystery: Third Engineer Missing from Cargo Ship

A troubling incident has occurred aboard the bulk carrier Valentina-1, operated by Martı Shipping, as 29-year-old third engineer Doğukan Demirtaş went missing during the ship's voyage from Indonesia to Singapore. Despite extensive search efforts, no trace of the young Turkish engineer has been found.

The ship, en route from Bahodopi Port to Singapore, discovered Demirtaş's absence around 9:00 PM on December 17, 2024. Following the realization, the vessel immediately issued "man overboard" alerts to nearby ships. Search operations were initiated both on board and in the surrounding waters.

Authorities, including the Surabaya Coastal Radio Station and Vessel Traffic Services (VTS), have been broadcasting alerts to vessels in the area, urging them to assist in locating the missing crew member. However, as of now, these efforts have yielded no results.

    Concern Among Maritime Workers

The Maritime Workers Platform expressed concern over the incident on its social media channels, questioning Demirtaş's whereabouts. In a statement, they said: "Another colleague is missing! Doğukan Demirtaş, a 29-year-old graduate of Dokuz Eylül University and third engineer aboard the Valentina-1, has been reported missing since December 17, 2024. The ship is currently en route from Indonesia to Singapore. Where is our colleague Doğukan Demirtaş?"

This situation has sparked questions about the safety protocols aboard ships and the measures taken to prevent such incidents. Maritime authorities continue to coordinate search efforts while appealing for any information that could help locate the missing engineer.

As investigations continue, the incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks faced by maritime professionals and underscores the importance of ensuring their safety while at sea.
