Turkey's Coast Guard confiscates 16 vessels and 44 tons of seafood in a nationwide crackdown on illegal fishing activities.
Crackdown on Illegal Fishing: 16 Fishing Vessels and 385 Fishing Gear Seized
During inspections conducted across Turkey targeting fishery activities, 16 fishing vessels identified as engaging in illegal activities and 385 fishing gear were seized. Approximately 44 tons of seafood were confiscated during the operations.
In a statement made by the Coast Guard Command, it was reported that thousands of vessels have been inspected as part of the ongoing controls since the start of the 2025-2026 fishing season. Administrative actions were taken against vessels found to be fishing in violation of regulations, while the seized fishing gear was placed under custody.
It was noted that the approximately 44 tons of seafood confiscated during the inspections were delivered to the relevant units following the necessary legal procedures. The statement emphasized that illegal fishing causes serious harm to the marine ecosystem and fish stocks.
In efforts coordinated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, it was expressed that inspections targeting vessels fishing during prohibited periods and in restricted areas have been intensified.
Authorities stressed that inspections will continue with determination to protect sustainable fishing.
