The Maersk Line has declared 'General Average' after the fatal fire on the 'Maersk Honam'

The Maersk Line has declared 'General Average' after the fatal fire on the 'Maersk Honam'. The partner MSC announced that all of the company's containers will be under the control of the Richards Hogg Lindley (RHL) valuation company in London until all safety precautions have been taken. Maersk Line has not yet confirmed when and where their vessel will be at berth and unloaded. The 2M alliance partner MSC also informed that Maersk expected the event to result in high extraordinary costs. 'General average' means that all losses associated with the fire must be shared between the parties involved. RHL intended to keep all containers, including MSCs, under control until the security is assessed for both the average and the salvage costs. MSC encouraged customers to contact their insurance companies to inform them of the situation so that the cargo can be released as soon as possible. They had, however, not yet received any reliable information about the condition of theoir goods, but customers would be kept informed. The tugs engaged in the salvage were in vicinity 11 11N 065 51E on March 13,having moved about 70 miles within 24 hours.
