A NEW 2,194-TEU containership delivered to Lomar Shipping from a shipyard in China earlier this year has split in two, after smashing into the Durand reefs near New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean on July 12.

Buffeted by fierce weather the Kea Trader's structural condition deteriorated dramatically making salvage work very difficult after the ship ran aground, reported Singapore's Splash 24/7.

All the fuel has been siphoned off the ship and most of the containers have been offloaded, although, local media reported that a few boxes were spotted floating near the wrecked vessel, which will be sent to the scrap yard.
