CONSTRUCTION is underway on Liverpool2, Peel Ports' GBP300 million (US$467.8 million) in-river container terminal to enable 13,500-TEU ships to call at Liverpool, reports Rotterdam's Dredging Today.
A dredging operation has been launched by local football legends Bobby Charlton and Kenny Dalglish at a groundbreaking ceremony at commercial industry guests visited the port to mark the Liverpool2's launch.
Due to open in 2015, Liverpool2, is expected to attract larger containerships to central UK distribution hubs with its 35 million consumers within 150 miles being within easy reach of Ireland, a total that will generate four million TEU a year.
"Over the last 18 months APL, Evergreen and Zim have started to offer weekly feeder connections to Liverpool, whilst MSC and CMA CGM have continued to grow their long-standing feeder volumes through the port," said Peel Ports CEO Mark Whitworth.
Said Peel Ports Mersey managing director Gary Hodgson: "Construction work will enhance operations of the Port of Liverpool, one of Europe's leading ports, and enable access by the next generation of larger ships.
A terminal is being constructed on reclaimed land in the Mersey, known as the Seaforth Triangle. .
Dredging operations will result in 16.5 metres alongside the new 854-metre quay, requiring 230,000 square metres of yard surfacing; 6,100 metres of crane rails, 3,500 metres of roads as well as eight ship-to-shore cranes and 27 rail mounted gantries and 2,500 metres of fencing.
