Liaoning port container throughput to top 10 million TEU by year end NORTHEAST China's coastal province of Liaoning estimated that the collective container throughput of its ports will exceed 10 million TEU by the end of year, while the throughput tonnage will increased by 50 million tonnes to 930 million tonnes.
As of the end of June, Liaoning's port throughput tonnage in the first half of 2013 had hit 500 million tonnes, 14.1 per cent more than in the same period in last year. The increase was 4.2 percentage points faster than the national average, according to Xinhua's report.
Liaoning's port-handled foreign trade shipments in the first half of year increased 12.4 per cent to 98.74 million tonnes. The growth was 4.5 percentage points faster than the national average.
But since July, the province's port throughput has started to go on a downward trend month to month. This is a reflection of the economic environment. Liu Huanxin, director of the Liaoning Provincial Transportation Department, said that facing the challenge caused by economic downturn, the government will encourage its ports to vie for more cargo.
For example, offering favorable policies to strengthen the cooperation between the port of Yingkou, Jinzhou, Huludao and Mongolia in a bid to develop schedule transportation service for trade cargo, and turn Liaoning into a transshipping hub for shipments from central and western regions of Mongolia, and from northern and northeastern regions of China.
Mr Liu said Liaoning will spend CNY20 billion (US$326.7 million) on port projects this year and make sure 17 projects are completed within the year, including the navigational channel expansion project at Dalian port's Dayaowan port area.
