As a part of efforts to enlarge and modernize its tanker fleet, Kuwait signed the delivery note of a 2.1 million barrels-load oil tanker built by South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering company (DSME). In statements to KUNA, Vice-President and Deputy General Manager of the state-run Kuwait Oil Tankers Company, KOTC, Sheikh Ali Hamoud Al-Sabah said this new tanker is part of the second phase of a renewal plan to construct four Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) and two oil derivatives carriers. The delivery note was signed by Sheikh Ali and DSME Chief Executive Officer Won-Kang Ki in ceremony, attended by a considerable number of the two companies' officials, held today at the Korean company's shipyards tanker in Geoji Island. The tanker, named Om Al-Aish, would arrive in Kuwaiti Al-Ahmadi Port on March 10, Sheikh Ali said. Om Al-Asih tanker is 330 metres long, 60 metres wide and 22.5 metres draft. It is the second tanker to be received by Kuwait as a part of a deal signed in August 2008 worth over USD 700 million with Daewoo for building four tankers for KOTC. The first tanker, Dar Salwa, was received by KOTC from Daewoo last November and it was 330 metres long and 60 metres wide and rated as a double hull tanker. Sheikh Ali said that the two tankers are eco-friendly and have the state-of-art technology.
