Korean researchers and Samsung Heavy Industries gain approval for a 15,000-TEU container ship powered by molten salt reactors, enhancing nuclear shipping.
Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering, and Samsung Heavy Industries have secured approval in principle from the American Bureau of Shipping for a 15,000-TEU container ship powered by molten salt reactors, reported Seoul's Chosunbiz.
The approval in principle process confirms the technical feasibility and safety of new designs at the concept stage. It carries significant weight in fields such as nuclear-powered ships, which remain at an early stage of international development.
The vessel design incorporates two molten salt reactors, a type of small modular reactor that utilizes liquid nuclear fuel. This system is optimized for safety and efficiency, making it suitable for long-distance operations.
KAERI developed the MARINA marine molten salt reactor, while KRISO and Samsung Heavy Industries designed the hull form, reactor layout, and power control systems. This collaboration aims to advance nuclear-powered ship technology.
Cho Jin-young, head of the Advanced Reactor Research Institute, stated that this achievement would help lead the zero-carbon ship market. Hong Ki-yong of KRISO added that securing design technology for the marine environment is critical to future competitiveness.
