Kolkata handles record 500,447 TEU in fiscal year despite constraintsTHE city's dockyard under Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) handled a record 500,447 TEU from April last year until March 10.
Within this total the river port handled 256,679 TEU of imports and 243,768 TEU of exports, according to figures provided by KoPT.
Port chairman RPS Kahlon said the result marked a major milestone in the history of the company "despite the grave operational constraints of low navigational draft in the river, unavoidable ship detentions due to lock operations of the impounded dock, and tide dependence in ship movement".
He said the port was able to achieve such cargo handling feats by adopting new technology in container handling by adding four high capacity mobile harbour cranes at three berths, reported Mangalore's Daijiworld.
Mr Kahlon said the Kolkata Dock System under KoPT will be able to handle 520,000 TEU by the end of this month.
