EASTERN Jiangsu province expects annual provincial container throughput is expected to surpass 20.5 million TEU through its ports by 2015 with an overall cargo volume of 2.05 billion tonnes, according to the 2011- 2015 development plan, said Xinhua.
Meanwhile, the collective capacity of the ports in the province will rise to 20 million TEU in terms of containers, totalling two billion tonnes. Jiangsu will have had 10 ports with throughput of 100 million tonnes or more in the same year, including Lianyungang, Suzhou, Nanjing, Nantong, Zhenjiang, Jiangyin and Taizhou.
Last year, the province had six ports whose throughput surpassed 100 million tonnes. Taizhou's throughput totalled 99.7 million tonnes in 2012 and is estimated to surpass 100 million tonnes this year.
Jiangsu recorded a year-on-year increase of 8.31 per cent in the number of vessels last year to 2.18 million last year, carrying a total of 1.2 billion tonnes of cargo, up 0.91 per cent. Both the vessel number and freight tonnage set a new record. Inbound cargo grew 5.76 per cent to 837 million tonnes. Outbound cargo was up 14.59 per cent to 367 million tonnes.
