ITALIAN police are looking into the disapperance of the 54-year-old Ukranian master of the 11,600 TEU containership MSC Giannina while the vessel was en route from the Italian ports of Gioia Tauro to Genoa.
The crew realised that the master, Juri Kharytonov, was missing when the ship was sailing between the Elba and Corsica islands in the Thyrrenian Sea. They then raised the alarm and police in Genoa were alerted, according to Singapore's Splash 24/7.
When the vessel arrived at the Voltri Terminal Europa at the port of Genoa the investigator placed in charge by the local court initiated legal proceedings and the vessel was arrested.
Each member of the Ukrainian crew were questioned for hours but none of them could give any useful information about the master's disappearance.
