THE International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) will challenge the shipping industry and policymakers to face the reality of powering global trade without the use of fossil fuels in its 2019 International Shipping Conference on Wednesday September 11 in London on Setting Course for 2050: Powering Global Trade. Taking place at the British Library during London International Shipping Week, the conference will bring together leading scientists, economists, oil & gas industry players, financiers, infrastructure and shipping leaders along with ministers and policymakers.
The programme will ask how the changing dynamics of global trade, new technology and the need to address climate change will impact business models and will set out how today's shipowners must prepare for the transition to zero CO2 emitting fuels - the '4th Propulsion Revolution'.
'We are bringing together a stellar line up to shine a light on the drivers that are shaping the global business agenda and to identify pathways for an equitable transition in the shipping industry and its value chain,' said ICS secretary general Guy Platten,
'This important event will welcome speakers at the cutting edge of industry, policy and thought leadership to engage with the shipping industry in what will be a unique forum for those seeking to shape the future of shipping,' he said,
Guest speaker will be Kitack Lim, secretary general, International Maritime Organisation, who will set out the 2050 Challenge.
Others include Kristina Fl?che Juelsgaard, Ballard Power Systems Europe (Denmark); Zoe Knight, Centre of Sustainable Finance, HSBC; John Lyras, Paralos Maritime Corporation (Greece); Esben Poulsson, chairman, International Chamber of Shipping (Singapore), Industrial Ecology Programme, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and IPCC 6th Assessment Lead Author, Working Group III - Transport (Norway) and Rhian-Mari Thomas of the Green Finance Institute (UK).
Sessions will include: Climate Change and the Shipping Sector; The Economics of Change; Fuel in Transition; and Building Capacity and Resilience.
