    INDIA's 12 major ports posted 5.65 per cent year-on-year higher cargo volume, totalling 60.07 million tonnes, according to the Indian Ports Association. Container volumes were up 6.7 per cent with Mumbai's JNPT, which handles more than half of India's containers, accounting for 448,000 TEU of the 861,000 TEU total for April, increased volume 3.7 per cent year on year.

    The fastest growing port was Deendayal (Kandla) Port, 450 nautical miles north of Mumbai, which achieved a 21. 2 per cent growth, followed by Cochin, where throughput was up 17.74 per cent and Paradip, which handled 17.19 per cent more cargo than a year ago.

    But not all major ports made gains, reported Dubai's Maritime Standard. Mormugao port slumped 36 per cent, while New Mangalore and Chennai declined 8.31 per cent and 6.73 per cent respectively.

    Coal volumes moving through the 12 ports achieved a strong double-digit increases, with coking coal shipments up 30 per cent and thermal coal by 12.65 per cent.
