US importer associations have appealed to White House to involve itself in the west coast longshore labour talks to prevent disruptions of cargo flow, reports IHS Media

US importer associations have appealed to White House to involve itself in the west coast longshore labour talks to prevent disruptions of cargo flow, reports IHS Media. The American Apparel & Footwear Association, the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) and the Travel Goods Association sent a letter to President Joe Biden asking the White House to intervene in the ongoing talks.

'We urge you to encourage both parties to remain at the table until an agreement is finalised because even a relatively brief port slowdown or shutdown would compound current supply chain challenges and cause long-lasting damage to consumer confidence and American businesses,' the letter said.

This comes after news that talks between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) that began May 10 in San Francisco were suspended for 10 days. Talks have since resumed. The contract expires July 1.

The Biden administration has previously met with leaders from labour and management privately to say work slowdowns would not be acceptable, said a source.
