The cargo ship 'Gökbey' was found illegally dismantled at Demircili Beach in İzmir, prompting legal action from Gendarmerie and Coast Guard teams.
Demircili Beach, renowned for its natural beauty, was the site where authorities discovered the illegal dismantling operations occurring in a cove designated as a protected area. Acting on a tip-off, they responded to reports of the dismantling.
Witnesses reported the dismantling of the ship in an area not designated as a shipyard to the 112 Emergency Call Center. Following this report, teams from the District Gendarmerie Command and Coast Guard Command were dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, the teams confirmed that the operations being conducted on the ship were unlawful. Investigations resulted in administrative sanctions imposed on those responsible by the Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, as well as the Port Authority.
A judicial process has also been initiated against the shipowners. Initial inspections in the area revealed no pollution related to asbestos or petroleum-derived substances.
Authorities are currently monitoring the process of removing the ship from its location and transporting it to a site suitable for dismantling in accordance with legal regulations.
