GERMAN container shipping line Hapag-Lloyd has contracted Shanghai-based Huarun Dadong Dockyard to convert Sajir, one of 17 vessels that have been earmarked for converting their heavy fuel oil-burning engines to a dual-fuel system powered by either liquefied natural gas (LNG) or low-sulphur fuel oil. According to the carrier, the conversion will make it possible for Sajir to emit 15-30 per cent less carbon dioxide (CO2), Gdynia's Harbours Review reported.

'By converting the Sajir, we will be the first shipping company in the world to retrofit a containership of this size to LNG propulsion. By carrying out this unprecedented pilot, we hope to learn for the future and to pave the way for large ships to be retrofitted to use this alternative fuel,' said fleet management chief Richard von Berlepsch.
