Three people have died on a passenger ship traveling from Argentina to the Cape Verde Islands, suspected of hantavirus.
The deceased Dutch couple has been reported to be 69 and 79 years old.
While the bodies of the couple who fell ill after boarding the ship were removed, the lifeless body of the third Dutch individual remains on board.
A 69-year-old British national who fell ill has been admitted to intensive care in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Tests conducted on this individual confirmed the presence of hantavirus.
The World Health Organization, providing information to the BBC, stated that tests are ongoing for five suspected cases.
Prof. Sanjaya Senanayake, an infectious diseases expert from the Australian National University, told the BBC that the virus variant in South America leads to symptoms of fluid accumulation in the lungs, and approximately 45% of the cases have resulted in death.
