MAERSK-OWNED Hamburg Sud has announced the naming of its newest container vessel, introducing the Polar Mexico at the Port of Veracruz, reports London's Port Technology. Hamburg Sud has been active in Mexico for 50 years and is one of the three largest shipping companies serving the Mexican market, connecting ports in Altamira, Veracruz and Progreso delivering to UK ports, Antwerp and Bremerhaven.
The new ship belongs to a group of four identical vessels as part of the 'Polar' class, all of which were built by Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding.
With a capacity of 3,800 TEU and equipped with 1,000 reefer plugs, the Polar Mexico is particularly suited for reefer cargo.
Reefer capacity is especially important for supporting the Mexican economy, as it is particularly strong in the fruit sector and other perishable goods industries.
Said Hamburg Sud CEO Arnt Vespermann: 'Mexico is one of the most important economies in Latin America and an important market for Hamburg Sud.
'We are proud that we are christening this vessel while the city and the port of Veracruz are celebrating their 500th anniversary.
'As a global carrier we are serving the Mexican market with a set of very competitive connections to almost all other continents,' said Mr Vespermann.
The christening of the Polar Mexico also marked a first berthing of a container vessel at the new ICAVE terminal, a major infrastructure development in the Port of Veracruz that will begin operating in the near future.
