Full-Scale Ammonia Engine Testing Begins in Copenhagen

Copenhagen, December 3, 2024 MAN Energy Solutions has reached a significant milestone in the development of its ME-LGIA (Liquid Gas Injection Ammonia) engine. Testing has begun on a full-scale, two-stroke ammonia-powered engine at the company’s Research Centre Copenhagen (RCC), marking a major step in the journey toward commercial dual-fuel ammonia engine technology.

From Single Cylinder to Full-Scale Testing

After over a year of successful single-cylinder ammonia testing, MAN Energy Solutions is now transitioning to testing a complete engine.

Ole Pyndt Hansen, Head of Two-Stroke R&D at MAN Energy Solutions, said: “This is a key moment for our ME-LGIA project. Over the past few months, we’ve worked on the conversion process and ensured that all safety systems meet our standards. Now, we are ready to focus on critical aspects like combustion and emissions, engine tuning, atomizer testing, and control-system verification.”

The current testing phase is expected to continue until mid-2025.
