The crew consisted of 19 Russians and 11 Indonesians. The vessel had failed to establish contact at the allotted time, neither did it send out any distress signal. The emergency beacon did not work. At a request from the vessel owner, and An-24 plane of the Far Eastern rescue centre was sent to the area. It surveyed an area of 2,600 square nautical miles. Two fishing vessels in this area joined the rescue operation. They searched an area of 280 square nautical miles. Later, three more fishing boats joined the search. At 10.30 p.m. the captain of the f/v "Talan" reported to the Vladivostok rescue centre that the crew had spotted an overturned vessel. Twenty minutes later, the cargo vessel "Anatoly Torchinov" found a life raft with ten people. They were taken aboard the ship, which was heading for the port of Kholmsk in the Sakhalin Region. The "Anatoly Torchinov" reported rescuing six Russian and four Indonesian sailors from the boat. On the whole meanwhile 15 surviving crew members, including the captain, were rescued alive and six more dead. The fate of nine men remained unknown to date. The search for the missing fishermen was continued with four ships and a plane. The salvage tug "Atlas" sailed from the port of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. It was planned to involve a Mi-8 helicopter and a Be-200 plane on Jan 28.
