Fire traps 32 crew on Danish cargo ship

A fire aboard a Danish cargo ship off the coast of Norway was still burning early Sunday.

A fire aboard a Danish cargo ship off the coast of Norway was still burning early Sunday. The fire began Saturday in a container on the upper deck of the Britannia Seaways. The container was carrying fuel, said Bjorn Aamlid, rescue coordinator with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre for Southern Norway. At one point, firefighters were able to almost contain the fire -- but it flared up again because of the fuel.No injuries have been reported. Twenty crew members, 12 military personnel and nine firefighters were aboard the ship, helping to extinguish the flames. The Britannia Seaways was in the North Sea en route from northern Norway to Bergen, Denmark. The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Damaged ferry docked in Bergen On Nov 17 at 3.37 p.m. the "Britannia Seaways" finally moored at the Dokkeskjærs Quay in Bergen, and the stern ramp was lowered. Firefighters and police boarded the ship. Several helicopters were flying across the Harbour, and while smoke still emerged from the ship, it proceeded through the Fedje Fjord, escorted by the "Normand Arctic" and timewise the "Torsborg", at 1.30 p.m. and entered the Jekteviken Port at 2.30 p.m. On the last leg she was assisted by tugs into the dock.  A representative of the Defence Ministry will have to assess how much of the military equipment on board was damaged. Regarding the cause of the fire it was possible that in storm "Hilde" which raged in western Norway the cargo may have shifted and was ignited then by diesel fuel. The port authorities and the fire departmentlaid out oil booms in case of leakage from the ship. The whole crew was sent to the Haakonsvern Hospital for a check.
