Ferry slammed into quay in Messina
In the morning of March 23, 2017, at 9.40 a.m. the "Telepass" which runs between Villa San Giovanni and Messina, suffered a blackout while mooring in Messina. Attempts to drop anchor and restart the engine failed and the ship bumped into the dock, causing extensive damage to the quay structure and also an optical fiber cable for telecommunications. There were moments of tension and panic on board when the crew alerted their passengers shouting "all lying on the ground." Luckily no one was injured as a result of the allision, but when dropping off passengers, a crew member stumbled and suffered a fracture and was taken to the Papardo hospital for treatment. An ambulance, the State Police and the staff of the port attended after the accident. The area was evacuated and work to secure the dock started. The "Telepass" has been replaced by "Archimedes".
