On Aug 28, 2018, a fire broke out in a truck on the car deck of the 'El Venizelos' off the coast of Hydra, 32 miles south of Piraeus. The ferry had 870 passengers on board and was two hours into the voyage from Piraeus, which had started at 10 p.m., to Chania. The captain made an announcement informing passengers of the incident. The ship returned immediately to the port of Piraeus, while smoke crept through the decks. The Greek Coast Guard attended with six boats, and also the ferry 'Blue Horizon' diverted to the ship.
