61 passengers and nine crew members were evacuated from the “Mestre Simao” in the morning of Jan 6, 2018, after she ran on rocks in the approach of Madalena on Pico island. The ship was enroute from Horta on Faial island. The Coastguard, marine police and ambulances were mobilized, but no one was injured. Some passengers were treated for shock symptoms. The castaways were towed ashore in a life raft 30 minutes after the grounding. The hull of the ferry was breached and suffered a leak.
