HUTCHISON's troubled Port of Felixstowe recovered 5

HUTCHISON's troubled Port of Felixstowe recovered 5.7 per cent productivity, having handled 74,000 TEU last week compared to 70,000 TEU the week before. Hutchison said that upgrades to the terminal operating system had led to improvements in performance such as the stacking arrangements in the container yard which has resulted in fewer shuffles being undertaken and a reduction in unproductive moves.

Recent problems have been blamed on teething problems arising from the introduction to a new terminal operating system, reported Colchester's Seatrade Maritime News.

As a result, the Hong Kong-owned port, the largest container facility in the UK, has seen lines diverting services with Maersk moving two transatlantic loops to Liverpool for a 12-week period, the report said.

'We continue to pursue a number of important initiatives and are confident that they will deliver further shipside and landside productivity improvements but the most recent changes have lifted shipside productivity rates,' the port said.
