JAPANESE ship building marine engineering and service company, Imabari Shipbuilding, with the cooperation of Marubeni Corporation, has secured a newbuilding order of twelve 11,000-TEU container carriers from Taiwan's Evergreen Line. The Japanese shipbuilder said in a statement that each box ship will be 334 metres long, about 48.4 metres wide and with a service speed of about 23 knots.

'Like our other ultra large-size containers with track record, these vessels are adopted with eco-friendly hull form design and Twin-Islander enhancing more loading capacity,' the statement said.

The vessels will be able to be deployed on many service routes such as between Asia, North/South America and Europe. With its breadth below 49 metres the vessel can pass through the new Panama Canal, according to the release.

'Imabari is very proud of already having built over 200 units of container carriers, including the ultra-large 20,000-TEU type which we delivered last year,' said the statement.

In addition, a series of 14,000-TEU and 20,000-TEU types are scheduled to be delivered this year, reports New York's Marine Link.
