A total of 20 new alternative-fuelled vessel orders were placed in January, with LNG continuing to dominate as the preferred fuel, according to Denmark's Shipping Telegraph.
Data from classification society DNV's Alternative Fuels Insight platform showed 16 LNG-fuelled container ships, three LPG carriers, and one methanol-fuelled offshore vessel among the orders.
Jason Stefanatos, Global Decarbonization Director at DNV, stated that the figures marked a continuation of trends observed in 2025, with container vessels leading the order book and LNG remaining the primary choice.
Stefanatos added that the orders reinforce the view that cargo owners and shipowners are pressing ahead with decarbonisation strategies despite market and regulatory uncertainties.
The AFI platform provides the maritime industry with an open tool to track the uptake of alternative fuels and technologies.
