A drone attack in Sochi injures 30, raising suspicions of Ukrainian involvement as significant fires erupt along the Black Sea coast.
Drone Strike in Sochi Port Injures 30 Amid Rising Tensions
Russian authorities announced that approximately 30 people were injured in a drone attack in the tourist city of Sochi on the Black Sea coast. While Ukraine did not claim responsibility for the attack, allegations have emerged suggesting a connection to the Kiev administration, which has recently carried out numerous drone attacks in the region.
Significant fires broke out along the Sochi coastline during the attack. Footage shared on social media from the moment of the incident showed flames rising along the beach and a large explosion, while it was reported that air defense systems in the area were also activated.
According to analyses by open-source intelligence analysts, it is believed that at least one of the explosions occurred in the coastal area in front of the Portofino Hotel. The region, located approximately 1 kilometer southeast of the commercial port, is a popular walking path, and images from the attack indicated that pedestrians were present in the area at the time.
A concert was also taking place in Sochi during the attack. Tatiana Bulanova, a pop star from Russia's 1990s, was performing at the Festival Cultural House, located about 1 kilometer southeast of the attack site. Following the attack, the concert was canceled, and the audience was sent home.
Sochi Port has been targeted before
The targeting of Sochi drew attention not only because the city is a tourist center but also due to its small commercial port. The presence of a residence belonging to Russian President Vladimir Putin in the region was also mentioned among the factors raised after the attack.
It is known that Ukraine has been conducting operations targeting Russian military personnel and intelligence officials in the regions occupied by Russia and deep within Russian territory.
Sochi Port was also the target of a maritime attack last week. It was reported that unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) allegedly belonging to Ukraine entered the port and attacked the Russian offshore support vessel Nefrit.
It was noted that one of the two USVs used in the attack reached the port side of Nefrit, causing damage to the vessel, while the other exploded before reaching its target. The second vehicle was assessed to have possibly been neutralized by Russian defensive fire.
Russian media blamed Ukraine and the UK
Russian state media described the attack as a 'terrorist attack.' Vladimir Solovyov, one of Russia's leading state television propagandists, claimed that the attack was carried out by Ukraine and that the UK was behind it.
In his assessment of the attack, Solovyov blamed Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy and issued stern threats towards Europe and Ukraine.
As for the specific target of the attack and the type of drones used, there is currently no comprehensive information verified by independent sources. Ukrainian authorities have also not claimed responsibility for the attack in Sochi.
