The dismantling of the 'Kathryn Spirit' in Lake Saint-Louis at Beauharnois, should be completed by the end of August. the works is in line with the schedule, which was set by Sep 1 at the latest, seven years after the Groupe St-Pierre acquired it in order to dismantle it and sell the metal. Unable to obtain authorization from Quebec City and the City of Beauharnois to proceed with the operations, the owner sold the ship to a Mexican company which then intended to tow it abroad. Without the approval of the authorities concerned, the company abandoned the 'Kathryn Spirit'. In 2016, Ottawa agreed to remove the vessel at its expense. The Groupe St-Pierre was awarded a first $ 7.9 million contract to erect a cofferdam to stabilize the wreck, and a second contract of $ 11.1 million in October 2017 to dismantle it.
