GERMAN logistics giant DB Schenker is collaborating with IAM Robotics to implement artificial intelligence-based robots into warehouse operations, reports New York's Air Cargo World

GERMAN logistics giant DB Schenker is collaborating with IAM Robotics to implement artificial intelligence-based robots into warehouse operations, reports New York's Air Cargo World. Hong Kong's Kerry Logistics, Germany's DHL and Connecticut-based XPO have also explored similar endeavours, said the report.

DB Schenker said the artificial intelligence-based innovation will serve as a platform as it aims to optimise its international network of warehouses with such technology advances over the next five to 10 years.

Pennsylvania-based IAM Robotics make piece-picking robots, which quickly scan warehouse shelves for specific items and collect them in a bin. This saves time and money by reducing the time it takes to find inventory, reducing labour costs.

DB Schenker said the investment will address challenges such as 'the shrinking labour market' and demand from shippers for 'high-velocity e-commerce business models'.

DB Schenker innovation chief John Stikes said that automation will enable them to 'redeploy labour to more thought-involved processes and gain enhanced flexibility in their operations'.
