Turkey's cruise tourism flourished in 2025, boosting passenger numbers and operational capacity, setting a strong foundation for 2026.

Turkey's cruise tourism experienced one of its strongest periods in recent years in 2025, both in terms of passenger numbers and operational capacity. The increase in the number of voyages, new route planning, and international interest in Turkish ports have positioned the sector to enter 2026 on a more solid and sustainable foundation. Evaluating the 2025 season, Captain Emrah Yılmaz Çavuşoğlu, Chairman of the Board of Camelot Maritime, emphasized the importance of growth focused on quality as well as quantity in the cruise sector.

With the growth momentum achieved in 2025, Turkey strengthened its position in the Eastern Mediterranean cruise tourism sector. The rising number of voyages, the interest of international cruise companies in Turkish ports, and developments in operational capacity have brought about a strong transition process into 2026.

One of the most striking indicators of this growth was Galataport Istanbul. In 2025, Galataport reached 595,000 passengers, marking a 48% increase compared to the previous year, surpassing a critical threshold in its goal of becoming the main cruise port of the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Cruise Sector Now Requires Ecosystem Management

Emrah Yılmaz Çavuşoğlu, who has been actively involved in technical management, operations, classification, and dry-dock processes in the cruise and commercial maritime sectors for many years, stated, 'As we enter 2026, the fundamental concepts the sector wants to hear from us are stability, transparency, and sustainable growth. The cruise sector is no longer just about operating ships. It requires safe operations, qualified human resources, and ecosystem management compatible with international standards,' highlighting the transformation of the sector.

Turkey: A Strong Candidate for a Central Hub in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea

Emphasizing the potential of Turkey's cruise tourism, Çavuşoğlu expressed that with the correct management of geographical advantages and technical infrastructure, Turkey could become a regional hub, stating, 'Turkey has the capacity to be a strong cruise center in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea thanks to its geographical location, the capabilities of our shipyards, our technical human resources, and our operational flexibility. However, for this to be sustainable, we need to speak a common language as a sector and focus on the same goals.'

The Approach of 'Reliable Operational Partner' Stands Out

Çavuşoğlu noted that accurately reflecting technical competence in the field, considering real operational experience in decision-making processes, and establishing transparent communication with stakeholders are among the most needed characteristics in the sector today. He expressed that positioning Turkey as a 'reliable operational partner' is possible with this understanding.

The Momentum Achieved in 2025 Is Not a Coincidence

Emphasizing that the sector needs to grow through collective intelligence and collaboration, Çavuşoğlu stated, 'The momentum achieved in 2025 is not a coincidence. We believe that with proper planning, operational discipline, and transparent management, this momentum will strengthen even further in 2026.' He also shared his expectations for 2026, saying, 'One of our main goals is for Turkish sailors to be more visible in the cruise sector, for local technical teams to take on more responsibilities in international projects, and for Turkey to become a trusted center on a global scale.'
