In the morning of June 20, 2018, the 'Koryo Maru No. 68' capsized and sank off the Miyagi Prefecture in the Pacific. The ship had been hit by a large wave and developed a list to port without recovering. Partner ships saved the crew of 18 with ropes and rafts withing several hours. The 'Koryo Maru No. 68' sank in the meantime. She had sailed on June 11 from Kesennuma and was due to return on June 22.
