CMA CGM, Nike, and Gemadept unveil a sustainable transport solution in Vietnam featuring a battery-powered barge and renewable energy infrastructure.
CMA CGM, Nike, and Gemadept have announced a new transportation solution that combines a battery-powered barge, charging infrastructure, and renewable electricity in Vietnam. According to CMA CGM's statement dated October 29, the route connects the Nike cargo delivery point in Ho Chi Minh City with the Gemalink deep-water terminal in Cai Mep.
The round trip of the barge is 180 kilometers long. The batteries will be charged with certified renewable electricity provided by the solar energy facility at the terminal. The system aims to enable transportation without direct greenhouse gas emissions during operations.
CMA CGM states that the barge is designed to carry over 50,000 TEUs annually. The companies expect the solution to prevent approximately 778 tons of CO₂ emissions per year; this figure is an estimate for the announced project.
Nike's statement dated October 28 describes the initiative as part of its program to reduce emissions from transportation in the supply chain. The project addresses electric propulsion and shore-based energy infrastructure as an alternative to road transport for inland shipping.
