CIMC leases two 8,800-TEUers to MSC, signs more long charters
SHENZHEN's China International Marine Containers (CIMC) is to charter its two new 8,800-TEU ships at US$25,000 per day each to the Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC), bringing the number to 14 ships that the box maker is leasing to the Geneva-based carrier.
Under the deal, CIMC Financial Leasing, a Hong Kong-registered subsidiary, ordered the containerships at $85 million apiece, backed by a 17-year MSC lease, after which the Marseille-based carrier is to buy them for $21.5 million a piece, according to the stock exchange filing.
The two new ships will be built at Jiangsu New Times Shipbuilding. There will be a two per cent downpayment and 98 per cent heavy tail, the same as earlier contracts, reports Lloyd's List. Delivery is scheduled for 2015.
In July, Shenzhen and Hong Kong dual-listed CIMC booked twelve 8,800-TEUers for MSC, seven at Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co and five at Jiangsu New Times.
MSC has engaged Chinese companies to charter new buildings with other commitments to six 9,400-TEUers and three 18,400-TEU ships with Bank of Communications Leasing and three 18,400-TEU ships with Minsheng Financial Leasing, said the report.
