The 300-TEU Zhi Fei achieves autonomous docking, enhancing efficiency and safety in maritime operations, reports Maritime Executive.
Four years after entering service as the world's first autonomous electric container feeder, the 300-TEU Zhi Fei has completed its first autonomous docking and cargo handling operation, reports Fort Lauderdale's Maritime Executive.
The ship, operated by Navigation Brilliance, docked at Qingdao Port Terminal in Shandong Province on February 21. Using autonomous navigation, the vessel positioned itself alongside the berth, where a vacuum-type mooring system secured it in just 30 seconds. The berth is also equipped with autonomous cranes and trucks for efficient loading and unloading.
Since entering service in April 2022, the Zhi Fei has completed 353 voyages, carrying more than 80,800 TEU last year. The ship has traveled over 48,000 nautical miles, and its systems have made more than one million independent decisions. Navigation Brilliance stated that the vessel operates with 30 percent fewer crew members and reduces the risk of human error by 80 percent, saving approximately US$27,500 monthly.
Navigation Brilliance chairman Jiang Haiying told Chinese media that intelligent shipping aims to make operations safer and more efficient, aligning with China's strategy to become a strong maritime power. The company reported overcoming challenges in radar technology and 5G connectivity while also improving battery capacity for electric propulsion.
The Zhi Fei is regarded as a demonstration ship to advance autonomous technology. Navigation Brilliance indicated plans to expand these systems to larger ocean-going vessels, including LNG carriers.
