Shanhaiguan Shipbuilding starts construction on a containership and LR2 tankers for international clients, marking significant collaborations.
Shanhaiguan Shipbuilding Industry Co. (SHGSIC), a subsidiary of Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, has begun work on two vessels for overseas owners, reported Shanghai's iMarine.
On June 12, SHGSIC broke ground on a 7,100 TEU containership for Greece's Danaos Corporation and the first of a series of 115,000 DWT LR2 product tankers for South Korea's Cido Shipping.
The LR2 tanker project marks the first collaboration between SHGSIC and Cido. In 2024, Cido entered the LR2 market by ordering 10 conventionally powered tankers from SHGSIC in a deal worth about CNYB4 billion (US$591 million). Deliveries are expected to begin in 2028.
Market sources said SHGSIC has also secured an order for four LR2 tankers from Greek owner Thenamaris, with delivery scheduled for 2029. The deal is the first collaboration between Thenamaris and DSIC in 30 years, following their initial contract in 1996.
