China Shipping dismisses reports of joining P3 vessel-sharing alliance
CHINA Shipping Container Lines has played down any talk of it joining the P3 vessel sharing-alliance between Maersk Line, Mediterranean Shipping Co and CMA CGM.
CSCL managing director Huang Xiaowen dismissed the rumour to SinoShip News, maintaining CSCL is not interested in joining any alliance at the moment.
His comments follow a South China Morning Post report that suggested China Shipping and United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) are considering joining the alliance, citing an unnamed source.
A report by the American Shipper said UASC's mention is likely connected to its order for five 18,000 TEU newbuildings and five 14,000 TEU ships slated for delivery in 2014-2015.
UASC's mega newbuilding order will boost its containership capacity by 60 per cent and propel it from the bottom of the top 20 league of ocean liners to the lower ranks of the top 12, according to Drewry Maritime Research.
The P3 alliance that is scheduled to commence in the second quarter of 2014 pending regulatory approval, would formally link the world's top three shipping lines on the three major east-west trades.
