Chattogram Port in Bangladesh achieves a new record of 3.23 million TEUs, showcasing resilience amid global challenges and boosting trade.
Chattogram Port, Bangladesh's premier seaport, has achieved a remarkable milestone by handling over 3.23 million TEU containers, setting a new record in the port's history.
The previous record of 3.21 million TEU was established in 2021.
The port authority anticipates that throughput will reach approximately 3.28 million TEU by the end of 2024, according to reports from The Financial Express, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Chattogram Port entered the 'three million club' in 2019, having handled around 3.08 million TEU.
Omar Faruk, secretary of the Chittagong Port Authority, stated that this achievement is a positive indicator of how businesses have overcome various challenges throughout the year.
Despite facing global crises and natural disasters, he attributed the success to efficient port management, collaboration among stakeholders, and growth in import-export trade.
"Global crises have started to subside, leading to a revival in trade. This has resulted in increased imports and exports, consequently boosting container handling," he remarked.
Faruk also highlighted that various initiatives have been implemented to streamline port operations, and the cumulative effect of these factors is evident in the improved performance of the port.
He emphasized that the growth reflects the dedication of the port authority, stakeholders, and all involved parties.
According to Faruk, the country's import-export activities have gained momentum this year, positively impacting container volume.
Throughout the year, the port's operations faced disruptions due to natural disasters, anti-government agitation, a curfew in July and August, internet shutdowns, and floods.
