MGH Group partners with Chittagong Port Authority to establish Bangladesh's inaugural private container terminal at Patenga, enhancing trade efficiency.

MGH Group has signed a contract with Chittagong Port Authority to build Bangladesh's first private container terminal at Patenga, reports Saint Petersburg's PortNews.

The agreement was signed in Chattogram by CPA chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman and MGH Group chief executive Anis Ahmed. The project will cover seven acres and include a 250-metre jetty, with a static capacity of 3,500 TEU and a monthly handling capacity of 40,000 TEU.

Terms include a 20-year land lease, an annual rent of Tk15 crore (US$1.22 million), and an initial investment of Tk550 crore. The group is expected to fund the project from its own resources.

The terminal's location near the river mouth is expected to significantly reduce vessel turnaround times, with berthing estimated at about 30 minutes compared to two hours at the main port, resulting in fuel savings of 0.6 to 1.3 tonnes per call. These figures were presented by project backers but have not been independently verified.

The deal marks a shift towards private capital in Bangladesh's port system, which has long been dominated by public infrastructure. Capacity pressure, turnaround times, and logistics costs remain central to trade performance.

MGH Group, headquartered in Singapore, operates across logistics, supply chain, ocean liner and agency services, healthcare, consumer products, airlines GSA, travel commerce, and other business lines in 26 countries. Chittagong Port Authority is the statutory body overseeing Bangladesh's main seaborne gateway.
