CARGO was the only sector to register a decline at Frankfurt airport in January compared to the same month last year

CARGO was the only sector to register a decline at Frankfurt airport in January compared to the same month last year. Airfreight and airmail at the German airport, Europe's largest cargo hub, posted a 4.3 per cent decline in January to 163,332 tonnes.

A spokesperson for the airport's owner, Fraport, said: 'Decisive factors affecting cargo traffic included weaker global trade and the resulting dip in demand.'

By contrast, Frankfurt handled nearly 4.7 million passengers in the first month of 2019, starting the year with 2.3 per cent traffic growth, although it would have been 4.3 per cent rise 'without strike and weather-related flight cancellations'.

Aircraft movements climbed by 2.3 per cent to 37,676 takeoffs and landings in the reporting month, according to London's Air Cargo News.
