Car carrier "Hoegh Osaka" freed itself The on Jan 7 was being being towed to a safe position after it freed itself. A combination of the tide and the water being pumped out of the vessel caused its refloating.  The ship was under control and being moved by three tugs just before 2 p.m. two miles east of its grounding position, towards Portsmouth Harbour and close to the Spitbank area and held on the Alpha Anchorage, between East Cowes and Lee-on-the-Solent.  All salvors had left the ship safely and a temporary exclusion zone of 300 m had been established around the vessel. A full assessment of the ship's condition was to be carried out on Jan 8. Disruption to the Port of Southampton was minimal.
