The International Maritime Organization has determined the theme of World Maritime Day 2026, celebrated on 24 September, as 'From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence'. The focus of the message is not only the acceptance of international rules but also their full implementation on the field.
IMO regulations do not produce results alone by member states becoming parties to the agreements. Transposition of the rules into national legislation; training port state and flag state inspectors; competence of seafarers; Classification, shipyard and operator procedures need to be harmonized with each other.
This approach particularly points out the risks created by differences in implementation in basic agreements such as SOLAS, MARPOL and STCW. Ships subject to the same rules encountering different inspection quality in different ports can reduce the level of safety and also create commercial uncertainty and unfair competition.
The IMO Council announced that World Maritime Day 2026 will be celebrated at the headquarters in London, and the parallel event will be held in Busan, South Korea, on 26-27 October. The 2027 event is planned to be held in the Philippines, and the 2028 parallel event is planned to be held in Qatar.
Concrete agenda for the sector; technical assistance to administrations with weak inspection capacity, standardization of reporting data, updating seafarer training and linking new environmental rules to the applicable investment calendar. Rather than the number of regulations, the theme demands that the regulations produce measurable results on the ship, in the port and in the administration.
