BRUSSELS Airport saw its cargo traffic rise by 2.5 per cent in September compared to the same month last year to a total of 58,051 tons of cargo, including trucked and flown volumes. Within the three components of flown cargo, full-freighter volumes were up 9.5 per cent year on year and belly cargo grew by nine per cent at the Belgian capital's main gateway last month. Freighter volumes rose on the back of new routes and customers such as LATAM and Atlas Air, reported London's Air Cargo News.
The equally strong growth in cargo transported in the bellyholds of passenger aircraft was attributed mainly to Cathay Pacific and Hainan Airlines commencing new routes to Asia, as well as to Emirates' doubling capacity to the Gulf region.
These new routes and additional capacity helped account for 21 per cent spike in imports through the airport in September, although exports remained steady year on year.
Trucked cargo was almost flat, after sliding by just 0.2 per cent. However, integrator volumes were down 4.2 per cent year on year due to DHL voiding several flights over the course of the month.
During the third quarter 177,330 tons of cargo moved through the airport, up 7.7 per cent year on year, while January to September volumes rose by 7.2 per cent against the same period in 2017 to 545,385 tons of cargo.
